One of the most renowned alternative cities in the UK, Nottingham is home to not just one of the gothest pubs in the country but some of the best shops and night life you'll find this side of the Midlands.
So what do you do when you find yourself in Nottingham with 24 hours to kill? and how do you hunt out the alternative side to the city? Well look no further than our alternative guide to Nottingham.
With the train station just on the edge of the city centre, you'll find easy access by foot or by tram with the tram line stating just opposite the station, alongside a coach station if you prefer to travel to bus. Nottingham's alternative shopping district is spread across the east side of the city, head towards Carlton street and you won't miss it.
From the train station you could head straight across the road to Hopkinson's if you love vintage, it's an emporium of vintage finds with a few independent designers thrown in for good measure. A treasure trove of treats, bargain hunters will love a good rummage around here. A walk towards the lace market unveils the cities alternative quarter, a good walk around the streets in this section will unearth an abundance of shops to visit. First stop of course has to be Void clothing one of the cities oldest alternative shops that's choc full of gothic finds, and just a few doors down is Ice 9 selling a selection of alternative wares and accessories.
Just down from there you'll find A vintage obsession, another must visit for the vintage aficionado - Update 2018 - A vintage obsession has now closed. Then down on Broad street is Wild clothing selling a mixture of vintage and new alternative wares, you'll want to have a good rummage around their two floors to unearth some wonderful finds. A good walk around the adjoining streets unveils pop up shops from vintage to alternative that may take your fancy.
From there if you head towards the Victoria centre you'll find Pulp clothing selling a mixture of alternative street wear, rockabilly and punk attire.
There are a few other alternative shops dotted across the city centre like Blue banana on exchange walk and The tokenhouse on bridlesmith gate that are worth a look at.
For a welcome pit stop after all that shopping you'll want to pay a visit to the much raved about Annie's burger shack on Broadway, a delightful diner that serves up plenty of burgers. And of course who can forget the cities infamous gothic pub The pit and pendulum on Victoria street, delightfully eerie inside and with a marvellous menu to boot!
Once you've finished off your shop, you can find plenty of night life across the city.. Dependant on what day you're in the city you can find a different choice of clubs and performances to take in.
No trip to the city would be complete with paying a visit to Rock city, with regular alternative, rock and metal club nights and a stream of gigs throughout the week. Just down the street you'll find The rescue rooms which plays host to gigs throughout the week and also has a rather cosy bar to visit.
Then there's The bodega if you prefer something with a more of an indie/electronic vibe with regular club nights and gigs across the week.
If you prefer something with a touch of tease then you'll want to visit Dr sketchy's Nottingham with bi-monthly classes that will tickle your fancy at the glee club, a venue which also plays host to The gilded merkin.
You'll certainly find plenty to do whatever day of the week you visit Nottingham, just be sure to allow enough time to fit it all in!
